SatinSheet is an in-situ sliding sheet system designed for use by people with widely varying degrees of ability. Their function is to assist people to turn and change position in bed with greater ease, either independently (commonly just using a mattress cover) or with assistance (using mattress cover and drawsheet combined).
There are essentially two major parts to the system which I will now clarify. There is also a video at the bottom of the page which may be of help.
Mattress Covers (SatinSheet 2D)
SatinSheet 2D is a cotton sheet with a low friction sliding panel in the centre (this is offset in the King Size version). The person lies directly on the satin panel, as this cuts down on the friction between bedding and nightwear making independent movement and turning easier. There are 3 different styles of mattress cover: flat sheet, fitted and elasticated corners.
All the SatinSheet mattress covers will have 2D in their name. For those of you familiar with other systems, this should not be confused with a 2 way draw sheet. In the SatinSheet range, 2D = mattress cover.
While the fitted sheets are designed specifically for a standard 3 foot (90cm) mattress, the elasticated corner and flat sheets come in a variety of widths, lengths and styles as shown in the table below.

The sheet you choose will depend upon your individual circumstances and while I appreciate that every case is different, I will give a general idea as to the typical usage for each.
Maxi King – where a couple are still sharing a double bed and one of them has difficulty turning. The offset sliding panel is ideal in this situation, as only the person requiring help lies on the low friction solution. May be used on its own or in conjunction with a draw sheet depending on the situation.
Maxi Double – for a single user occupying the centre of a standard double bed or for a larger user on a bariatric size bed. More commonly used in conjunction with a draw sheet.
Maxi 2D, 2D Corner, 2D Fitted and 2D Fitted Elastic – for use on any bed requiring a standard single (3 foot or 90 cm) mattress. 2D Corner and 2D Fitted are the most popular choices. Again, most commonly used in conjunction with a draw sheet. Note, there is now a version of the 2D Corner sheet that is suitable for a bariatric sized bed.
Midi 2D – now available in different widths and so suitable for beds from single up to standard double. Could be used by a child or small adult or where the individual has strong legs but upper body weakness. May be used on its own or in conjunction with a draw sheet depending on the situation. The choice of either the 60cm or 70cm sliding panel (single bed variants) or the 85 or 96cm panel (wider beds) would be down to personal requirements.
Mini 2D – also now available in different widths and so suitable for beds from single up to standard double. Commonly used in paediatric cases or where there is specific localised difficulty in movement e.g. expectant mothers.
Where the person requires assistance in moving or turning, a draw sheet should be used. Please note that the SatinSheet draw sheets must be used on top of a SatinSheet 2D – they will not function independently.
Draw Sheets (DrawSheet and 4D)
A draw sheet is placed on top of the mattress cover and the person to be moved lies on top of the draw sheet. By pulling on the draw sheet, a carer may move the person or assist them to turn.
There are two distinct types of draw sheet:
This cotton sheet has been designed to promote side to side movement on the bed, but will resist movement up and down the bed. Available in two different lengths, the Mini (100cm long, part no. IM4116S) and the Midi (140cm long, part no. IM4118S) are both 200cm wide.
4Direction or 4D
This is a cotton sheet with a satin underside to allow easier movement both side to side and up and down the bed. Available in two different lengths, the Midi (140cm long, part no. IM4115S) and the Maxi (200cm long, part no. IM4121S) are both 200cm wide. Both of these sheets now have an option with handles along each side, allowing one side of the draw sheet to be attached to a hoist to assist in turning.
